"Jugend musiziert!?" - Competition, Flow and Empowerment in Current MusicGames''

Media scientists predict that the 21st century will be the century of computer games, just like film and pop music in the 20th century and the novel in the 19th century shaped the popular culture of the western world. With the music games sing star or guitar hero I - III, the games industry has landed a major coup. It's about musician's life, sound, fun, like-minded people, distraction and concentration, competition, level, recognition and challenges to skill and perfection - just play. A game - even online - can easily last five hours or more, given the flow effects that set in! How would that please parents, music teachers or instrumental teachers, if their children/students would practice piano or guitar with the same intensity and perseverance! But that is not what the MusicGames are about. In them, positive emotions predominate, not the hardships of a mostly externally determined competitive pressure - as in "Jugend musiziert", a nationwide music competition.
